SPACE AND SENSORY: SELF - EXPLORATION THROUGH SPACES
[SENSORY SPACE]
Project 3
This project incorporates all that we have learned in the previous projects.
We were tasked with developing our isolation structure from project 2 into a Sensory Space to anticipate and accommodates users' needs and emotions. Moreover, we were also required to study and explore on actual building materials and to apply it in the final design.
Objectives of this Project
1. To further the student’s ability to create and develop a conceptual narrative.
2. To introduce and create awareness in understanding the dimensional requirements of the human body (anthropometrics and ergonomics).
3. To explore and apply basic design principles and terminologies.
4. To be able to consider objective and subjective parameters in the design process to create a space this is practical yet poetic.
5. To explore how the selection and application of materials in relation to the sensory experience of space.
6. To be able to select and make different study models (sketch, concept, diagram, section and development models).
Learning Outcomes of this Project
1. Produce design concepts through the process of exploring various sources and abstracting ideas.
2. Identify key architectural design elements and principles and employ them in creating an architectural composition that demonstrates space-making.
3. Relate the idea of the individual ‘self’ and the body’ to space and its experiential qualities.
4. Establish a basic level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to capture experiential qualities of the design.
5. Demonstrate satisfactory manual drawing and model-making skills to represent and communicate the design.
TASKS
Since we were supposed to develop our isolation structure from the previous project, the first thing we were tasked to do was to look into the previous model and to see if it can be used to create more spaces to anticipate and accommodate our needs and emotions during the pandemic.
Then we did our study on different building materials and chose two materials to build our structure with. We also did further exploration on anthropometry and ergonomics as this sensory space involved a number of different movements.
We created a bunch of test models to test out the design and with helpful critique provided by the tutor during the tutorials and during the interim crit, a final model was created.
