FARNSWORTH HOUSE
Project 2
Objectives of Project
• To introduce design communication skills through architectural graphics.
• To develop skills in visualization and communication of architectural idea, space and form.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
• Illustrate architectural forms and spaces through visualization and expression of space in the form
of manual drawing.
• Interpret visual information using two-dimensional and three-dimensional orthographic drawings
In this project, the project workload was divided into three parts; 2A Orthographic Projections, 2B Axonometric Projection and 2C Perspectives. The entire project was based on a modernist house called Farnsworth House designed by the famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
For 2A, we got two weeks to complete the orthographic projections, which included completing 1 plan drawing, 2 elevations and 1 section of the house. This was my first time drawing any kind of orthographic projections so it was a bit difficult to begin but once I started, it was very easy to figure out the rest and I even enjoyed doing it.
2B involved drawing an axonometric of the house, which I thought was the hardest among everything. This was also my first time drawing an axonometric and it was not as easy as figuring out the orthographic projections but with the guidance I got from my tutor Ms. Shahrianne and the lecture video on TIMeS which really simplified the process, I was quite proud of my final result.
In 2C, we had to produce two perspective drawings of the Farnsworth House; a one-point perspective and a two-point perspective. The drawing process involved a lot of rules and terms and I was a bit confused at first but the lecture video on TIMeS was of great help and I had an easy time figuring out how to draw the perspectives.
This project was a great introduction to the process of drawing architectural drawings and I learned a great deal from the lectures provided and from working on the drawings.
