ARCHITECTURE FOR PLACEMAKING

Project 1B & 1C

The students will concentrate on designing an Urban Heritage Gallery in Pudu within an urban context. The design of the building is to consist of appropriate architectural responses that address the aspects of the urban street context and user behavioural patterns as
discerned and analysed in the Preliminary Studies. Apart from developing a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the relevant questions pertaining to local community and its urbancontext, the design should take into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional and environmental
requirements to design an urban heritage gallery for the community. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design
exploration and detailing of the façade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language of the overall design project. The design outcome has to exhibit strong integration in construction and theory, within the Studio, whilst concurrently integrating with the Module on Building Services.

Objectives of this Project

  • To take into consideration key aspects of urban design and context in relation to
    architecture

  • To develop an awareness and basic compliance to Design Codes and Statutory
    Requirements

  • To emphasize the importance of elevational context and composition in developing
    architectural design

  • To implement and explore the conceptual, schematic and design development
phases in an architectural design project

Learning Outcomes of this Project

  • Investigate and examine the effective conditions to propose architectural strategies
that connects to the urban communities and complies with the Design Codes and
    Regulations.

  • Design an effective and appropriate architectural outcome that encompasses the
appropriate site-specific architectural responses through its formal, cultural,
legislative, structural and environmental design solutions for specific urban
    conditions.

  • Establish a good level of understanding of materiality and detailing as means to
capture experiential and innovative qualities of the design.

  • Illustrate the design narratives and produce drawings (both 2D and 3D), models and
presentations to verbally and visually communicate architectural design outcome.

TASKS (1B)

The task at this stage was to develop a clear architectural design strategy for the Urban Heritage Gallery in Pudu. I was expected to establish my own approach and position for creating this gallery, based on the issues and inspirations identified in our earlier project. The goal was to individually interpret the concept of an Urban Heritage Gallery for the Pudu community and come up with a strategy that incorporates urban design principles like character, continuity, enclosure, quality of the public realm, ease of movement, legibility, adaptability, and diversity.

I was also required to explore different form-typologies by working with 1:100 scale models. The idea was to ensure that the final design reflects both the unique identity of Pudu and the broader principles of urban design.

I had a slow start with Project 1B and needed some time to really get into it. Initially, I struggled to figure out where to begin, but with my tutor's guidance, I was able to start, and things improved from there, though it remained challenging. While I liked my design concept, I wish I had done more to explore and develop it further. Finding appropriate precedent studies and analyzing solutions to the issues identified in Project 1A was challenging but also enjoyable.

TASKS (1C)

For this project, the goal was to develop an architectural strategy for place-making and create an integrated design for the Urban Heritage Gallery. Building on the insights from Project 1B, I was responsible for defining the strategy in terms of form, activity, and circulation, while also addressing technical integration to ensure the design effectively connects with the urban context and community needs.

From this project, I learned how to develop a comprehensive architectural strategy that integrates form, activity, and circulation with technical considerations. I gained valuable insights into applying lessons from previous work to address community needs and fit the urban context. This project deepened my understanding of facade design, where I explored how to create a cohesive and functional facade that retains its uniqueness and draws people into the Urban Heritage Gallery. I appreciated how I redefined the gallery concept, giving it new meaning within the given brief.

I also focused on improving my time management, realizing that I spent too much time on some tasks and needed to move on more efficiently. I plan to continue developing these skills in the next semester and apply everything I've learned from this project. Reflecting on the semester as a whole, I see areas where I could have approached things differently, but I'm proud of my accomplishments and look forward to improving further in the future.
